Tamaki was born and raised in Osaka. She has always had a passion for food and after high school completed a Bachelors degree in Agriculture at Kobe University. After a few years working in Japan, Tamaki decided to follow her dream of becoming a chef. So she moved to Melbourne, studied English and then completed her chef’s qualifications at the William Angliss Institute. Since then she has worked for a number of Melbourne’s well known restaurants including the RACV Club, Mezzo and Lil Boy Blue.

Tamaki’s passion is introducing non-Japanese people to the foods and cultures of her native Japan. When she started talking to people about this idea she discovered that even though many people wanted to experience Japan they did not end up doing so for three main reasons.

Firstly, the majority of tours to Japan focus purely on the historical and cultural aspects of Japan, and not the food. So for a food lover, you miss out on so much.

Secondly, Japan has four seasons, six climates, over 2000 years of history and each of the 47 regions has their own food culture. So you don’t even know where to start.

Thirdly, as a tourist you probably don’t speak Japanese and so it is very difficult to find the best local foods. So you end up having the same dish over and over again.

In order to solve these challenges Tamaki launched her Chef Tamaki Japan Food Tours. Each Spring and Autumn she takes 12 people on a 14 day gourmet food tour with Tamaki as your personal tour guide, chef and interpreter.

In order to acclimatise to Japan and get to know other Japanese food lovers, Tamaki also hosts monthly events in Melbourne. Including Tasting Nights at Melbourne’s best Japanese restaurants; cooking classes teaching you how to do prepare Japanese dishes; as well as Pop Kitchens where Tamaki prepares her own style of fusion Japanese food.
